Debt Consolidation Loans by City

A debt consolidation loan rolls several balances into one fixed payment. Done well, it can lower what you pay and give you a finish line. Done poorly, it adds fees and time. These city guides walk through both sides, state by state.

A debt consolidation loan is usually an unsecured personal loan with a fixed rate and a fixed term. You use it to pay off higher-interest balances, often credit cards, and then make one monthly payment until the loan is paid off. Some lenders will send the money straight to your creditors.

Whether it helps depends on the numbers: the APR and origination fee you are actually offered, the length of the term, and whether you can keep the paid-off cards from filling back up. A longer term can lower the monthly payment while raising the total interest. Balance transfers, nonprofit credit counseling and debt management plans are alternatives worth comparing.
